History has proven there are aspects within Marxist theory that lead to violence, as a consequence of the negative impacts of economic control by the state and the loss of individualism and freedom. Marxism and libertarianism represent two fundamentally different approaches to socioeconomic and political philosophy, making them antithetical to each other. Here’s an explanation of their key differences:

Economic System:

Marxism: Marxism advocates for a centrally planned economy, where the means of production are owned and controlled by the state or the working class. It emphasizes collective ownership and the abolition of private property. The goal is to eliminate social classes and achieve economic equality.

Libertarianism: Libertarianism promotes a free-market capitalist system, where individuals have the right to private property and the means of production. It emphasizes limited government intervention in economic affairs and supports voluntary transactions and free trade.

Role of the State:

Marxism: Marxism advocates for a strong, centralized state that oversees the redistribution of wealth and resources. It believes that the state is necessary to transition society from capitalism to socialism and eventually communism. The state plays a key role in planning and regulating the economy.

Libertarianism: Libertarianism promotes a minimal state or even a stateless society. It emphasizes individual freedom and limited government intervention. Libertarians argue that the state’s role should be limited to protecting individual rights, such as life, liberty, and property, and enforcing contracts.

Class and Inequality:

Marxism: Marxism focuses on class struggle and views society as divided into antagonistic classes: the bourgeoisie (capitalist class) and the proletariat (working class). Marxism seeks to eliminate class distinctions by establishing a classless society, where the means of production are collectively owned and wealth is distributed according to need.

Libertarianism: While libertarians acknowledge the existence of inequality, they generally view it as a natural outcome of individual differences in talent, effort, and choices. They argue that individuals should be free to pursue their own interests and keep the fruits of their labor. Libertarians believe that a free-market system allows for the most efficient allocation of resources, which can benefit society as a whole.

Individual Rights and Personal Liberty:

Marxism: Marxism tends to prioritize collective interests over individual rights. While Marxists advocate for certain individual rights, such as labor rights and freedom from exploitation, they view these rights as subordinate to the collective goals of the working class and the eventual establishment of communism.

Libertarianism: Libertarianism places a strong emphasis on individual rights and personal liberty. Libertarians argue for the protection of civil liberties, including freedom of speech, association, and expression. They generally advocate for a limited role of the state in regulating personal choices and lifestyle decisions.

It is easy to understand that Marxism and libertarianism clash because the philosophies represent two contrasting ideologies that cannot coexist. The two philosophies have completely different views on economic systems, the role of the state, class and inequality, and individual rights. These differences make them incompatible and diametrically opposed to each other, forming the antithesis of one another. Considering these differences, it is easy to understand why Marxism has lead to much violence and death when applied to the real world. The result of libertarianism has proven to lead to a more peaceful society.

Marxism places a heavy emphasis on collective ownership and control of resources, which often requires the suppression of individual liberty with the threat of state violence. Libertarianism, on the other hand, values individual freedom and believes in the right to private property. The emphasis on the collective in Marxism can lead to an erosion of individual rights and personal autonomy.

Marxists advocate for centralized planning and control of the economy by the state. This approach ignores the valuable information provided by market mechanisms, such as prices and competition, in allocating resources efficiently. Libertarianism, on the other hand, recognizes the benefits of voluntary exchanges and decentralized decision-making through free markets. When people are free to exchange goods and ideas they tend to be more peaceful.

Marxism seeks to eliminate class distinctions and create a classless society. However, this can lead to a lack of incentives for individuals to work hard and be productive. Without the ability to enjoy the fruits of their labor and the potential for upward mobility, people may lack the motivation to excel. Libertarianism recognizes the importance of incentives and rewards for individual effort and innovation.

Libertarians understand Marxism has been a failure because it assumes that humans are primarily motivated by economic factors and that they will act in the interest of the collective. However, humans are complex beings with diverse motivations and preferences. It takes force or coercion on the minority to get everyone to act the same way. Libertarianism acknowledges the importance of individual choice and recognizes that people have different goals and aspirations that may not align with a collective vision.

Throughout history, attempts to implement Marxist principles have often resulted in economic inefficiencies, lack of innovation, and the erosion of personal freedoms. Libertarianism points to these failures as evidence of the inherent flaws in Marxist theory and argues for a system that respects individual rights, free markets, and limited government intervention.

In summary, libertarianism critiques Marxism for its suppression of individual liberty, central planning, lack of market mechanisms, incentive problem, failure to account for human nature, and violent historical track record. It advocates for a system that prioritizes individual freedom, voluntary exchange, and decentralized decision-making through free markets that tends to promote a more peaceful society.

Donny Letson, Libertarian, Editor

Marxism is the anthesis of libertarianism.
